Invisalign and Braces for all ages
Braces aren’t just for the young any longer. In fact, 1 in every 4 people who wears braces is over the age of 21, according to the Canadian Association of Orthodontists. We expect that ratio to rise as advancements in dental straightening systems are made. It really is easier than ever to achieve the straighter smile that you’ve always wanted… at any age.
Despite advancements, we still hear concerns from many adults who are hesitant to straighten their smiles because of the stigma attached to older persons with straightening aids, or because of price. They are real concerns that we look to address and remove every day. While we can’t do much about the price and a patient’s individual dental benefits, we can talk with our patients about their options (and there are more than ever) for achieving a straighter smile.
Today we tend to focus on two key methods for straightening… regardless of age.
When we say “traditional braces,” we are referring to the metal braces that so many still associate with orthodontics. Traditional braces still play a very important role in teeth straightening, despite the introduction of invisible aligners. In fact, with some of the improvements to appearance, comfort, and time commitment, some of our patients, mostly the younger ones, ask for the traditional braces and the accompanying colourful bands. It really is all about the bands.
We may require traditional braces for more complex cases that require greater shifts to the overall bite structure. Braces allow our Waterdown dental team to better control the shifts that need to take place in the mouth to achieve the overall desired look.
For simpler cases, or for those who don’t want an obvious straightening aid, the invisible aligners are often the best solution. The one that is most asked for by name is Invisalign.
While still effective at shifting the majority of patients’ teeth into the desired position, patients prefer their low-visibility look and flexibility in removing throughout the day as needed. Only needing to be in place for 20 to 22 hours each day, those with Invisalign don’t have to say no to things like popcorn and chewy candies. Whether you should be partaking of chewy candies is an entirely different conversation for another time.
Fewer Visits with Invisalign
While we love when our patients visit, many see another benefit to Invisalign is the fewer visits you will have to make to our Cranberry Hill office. With traditional braces we typically see our patients every 4 weeks, but with Invisalign, we can stretch those visits to every 6 to 8 weeks, freeing up your time for doing the activities that make you smile most.
We get that the straightening process can be overwhelming and a little frightening… especially for our older patients who associate braces with tightness and pain. Let’s talk about your concerns and hopefully we will have some answers that will make you smile. Talk with our Cranberry Hill Dental team and we will answer all your questions so you can make the decision that’s right for you.
Your questions are always welcome. Feel free to ask about your own oral health journey and risk factors. Remember, the more you share with your dental team, the more we can proactively keep your smile healthy.
