Cleaer Braces in Waterdown - Cranberry Hill Dentistry

You know about crowns for kings and queens but what are crowns for teeth? Our dentist in Waterdown, Dr. Aaron Langdon, gets a lot of questions. What are the best teeth flossers, are electric toothbrushes better, what is a dental implant procedure? Here are some of the answers:

Let’s start with “What are Crowns for Teeth”?

A crown is a thin, hollow “artificial tooth sleeve” that is placed over a damaged tooth to protect it. A crown is similar to a veneer. A veneer is placed on the front of the tooth only, while a crown is placed over top of the tooth – like a crown – covering the entire tooth, front and back.

Crowns are also used as part of a “crown and bridge” treatment. A bridge may be recommended when there are two healthy teeth on either side of a missing tooth or teeth. Crowns are placed over the two healthy teeth and used to keep the bridge in place. Because of the many different dental uses, it’s easy to understand why so many people might ask our dentist, Dr. Aaron Langdon, “what are crowns for teeth.

Clear Braces, Invisalign or Metal Braces – What is the Right Choice?

In addition to asking “what are crowns for teeth”, many patients want to know which is the right choice, Invisalign, metal and clear braces. The truth is, for the most part there’s no right choice. All help straighten your teeth. They differ in material, procedure, and cost.

  • Metal braces are one of the most common types of braces.
As their name says, they’re made out of metal. Metal brackets are affixed to your teeth and bound together with metal wires to slowly shift teeth into position. Metal braces are a cost effective, tried-and-true procedure, but they’re not as popular today as clear braces or Invisalign.
  • Clear braces are less visible than metal braces.
Again, it’s pretty much in the name. Instead of metal, clear braces are made from a ceramic material that is either transparent, or made to match the colour of your teeth. They use clear elastics vs. wire. Clear braces work similarly to metal braces, but they’re a little less visible in your mouth.
  • Invisalign is made to be almost invisible.
Most people don’t even know people using Invisalign are wearing braces. Unlike metal and clear braces, Invisalign can be removed from your mouth, making it easier to eat and brush your teeth. They are more costly than metal braces, but many patients prefer the benefits of Invisalign.

This is a quick overview, and there are more differences between the treatments. Dr. Aaron Langdon can tell you more.

What happens during a dental implant procedure?

A dental implant procedure is a common treatment to replace a missing tooth. During a dental implant procedure, an “artificial root” made out of titanium is embedded in the gum, and an artificial replacement tooth is attached to it. Dental implants are an alternative to bridges or dentures.

What are the best teeth flossers?

Dr. Aaron Langdon says the best teeth flossers are the ones you use every day! Each dental flossing product has different benefits. Choose the one you feel most comfortable with and use it to floss between your teeth, every day. The Canadian Dental Association website contains great tips on how to floss and brush properly.
