There’s No Age Limit on Orthodontics to Straighten Teeth

There are a lot of adults out there with crowded and misaligned teeth. You can spot them easily because they are often the ones hiding their smiles so no one sees their teeth. Maybe they didn’t have the opportunity to straighten teeth when they were young because of financial reasons or maybe their teeth have shifted after having wisdom teeth or other teeth removed. Whatever the reason, there is no reason why age should prevent you from starting orthodontic treatment as an adult. In fact, the benefits of properly aligned teeth can go well beyond just the effect they have on your smile.

Misaligned teeth, or malocclusion, affects the way your teeth meet when your upper and lower jaw close together. When the teeth don’t meet properly, pressure can build up in certain areas causing everything from tooth pain, earaches, joint pain (TMJ), and even migraines. What’s worse, crooked and crowded teeth are difficult to clean and can make certain areas of your mouth more susceptible to tartar buildup and eventual gum disease.

More Options Than ‘Metal Mouth’

Once you make the decision to seek orthodontic treatment, there are options available to you that won’t have you looking like a teenager with a mouth full of metal. Ceramic braces are essentially the same as traditional metal except that the brackets are made of a white ceramic material that is less visible than metal brackets; lingual braces are mounted on the inside of the teeth so that they are virtually invisible; and Invisalign uses is a set of clear, removable trays that force teeth into alignment without the traditional brackets and wires. Because Invisalign is clear, they are less noticeable than traditional braces, and you can remove them for a short time if necessary.

It’s Never Too Late to Straighten Teeth

If you are not happy with the alignment of your teeth or are experiencing pain, difficulty chewing or keeping your teeth clean orthodontic treatment may be a good option for you to explore. Whether you opt for traditional braces or Invisalign you’ll end up with straighter teeth and a smile you can be proud of.
