What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a bacterial infection targetting the gums. There are a few forms of gum disease, some more extreme than others. For example, the earliest form is known as gingivitis. Redness and inflammation are two common symptoms reflecting this stage of gum disease. A more advanced stage is called chronic periodontitis. How to Maintain Healthy Gums

While gum disease is common, there are a few ways to maintain healthy gums and prevent gum disease.

  2. Flossing. In addition, to brush your teeth, you should also be flossing your teeth. Flossing helps to remove plaque and food from in between your teeth and around your gum line. Since flossing helps remove plaque, this is another way to prevent gingivitis.
  3. Visit your dentist for cleaning appointments.  If you allow plaque to build up, it can be difficult to remove without help from the dentist. Attending regularly scheduled cleaning appointments can help remove additional plaque and maintain the health of your teeth and gums!
